Well, basically there are two parts to Newsgroups. Many people use Newsgroups simply as a giant forum or bulletin board(which it basically is).

The groups you want to look at are called "alt.binaries" That's what they all start with.

See if you can find some that start with that. They are also known as 'alt.bin' or 'a.b', just for future reference.

If you have any more problems or questions, just ask.

Thanks for the article, however (and i'm probably being really stupid here), i don't understand how this works. I recently subscribed to giganews, downloaded firefox thunderbird to view the newsgroups and have added a few groups from the alt.binaries sections.

When I go into these newsgroups they appear to just be a large discussion forum with no links to any sort of downloads, be it RAR or PAR files at all. Is there something that i'm missing here?

I'd appreciate some help.

Thanks for your time.

Also consider Altopia (https://www.altopia.com/) for your server needs. Binaries retention is only about 10 days, but cost is accordingly less at $6/month. Great for text users or folks that don't need extended binaries retention.
