Tuesday Tips: Generate Motivation
All of us need a reason, or rather motivation, to do anything. Even if it’s something we enjoy, the reason we do it is because we enjoy doing it, thus that is our reason. Motivation can be a hard thing to keep consistent though.
I recently attended the Arnold Sports Festival which was held in Columbus, Ohio. You can read more about my trip as well as view my pictures by reading my article on it found here. This trip was quite a motivation booster for me. It’s not often that I get to go to events like this so it was a real treat, even though I was only able to make it there for one day. I spent my entire day there watching the Martial Arts events, rather than going to see some of the other many events they had going on.
Being able to watch others performing especially when they did well, whether it be someone performing a demonstration or two fighters giving quite a show, was such a thrill. I found this to be one of the best methods of generating motivation for myself. Seeing others working so hard makes me consider all that I’ve been doing as not enough. I didn’t even once stop to think that I might get this benefit of motivation from going. I was simply going to go have fun. Now that I’m back and have had time to reflect on it, I see how much going to this festival really helped me out.
I think a big part of why we get lazy at times is because of a simple lack of motivation. Maybe we need to focus a bit more attention on not just what we’re doing to train ourselves, and apply a bit of that time and energy towards keeping ourselves training via means of generating motivation.

I agree finding the motivation to train especially in individual training is one of the biggest obstacles for us to overcome as martial artists.
If in doubt a couple of good martial arts movies or clips never go astray. These clips from Kuro Obi might do the trick.

Thanks for the video clips, those are great. I’m always looking to expand my library of Martial Art videos.

Hi,
Wonderful post.
Motivation is surely a tough entity nowadays. Liked your style of writing, keep up the good work, I’ll be back to read more.

Very true, motivation is crucial! The sports festival sounds like a great event, i’m sure I would have left feeling pumped up too.

It was a wonderful event to attend. It’s great to meet other people who are just as passionate as you are(or more) about something.

Sometimes I need to move and continue doing the things I do despite whether or not I feel motivated. Like Qigong…I’ll never really like it…but I always like it’s results.
But hoping for results doesn’t motivate me directly. I spring Qigong on myself to avoid avoiding it.
Nevertheless, I think motivation discussions are useful. Motivation is key to many things. I have a rebel’s heart though, so resistance and tenacity both play a bigger role for me.

I know exactly what you mean. That mentality can be a hard one to deal with(or break), but it’s worth it in the end. Like you mentioned, it may not be the work that you enjoy, it’s the result it provides. I think that can be said for a lot of things we have to do in life.
For instance, if we don’t work, we don’t eat.(Well, at least that applies to a good portion of most people)
